Medical Neurology Conditions
Medical Neurology Conditions are the result of underlying medical conditions that affect the nervous system. Our internal medicine team handles systemic or metabolic causes of neurological signs, especially when the root cause isn’t obvious.
Examples include:
Hepatic Encephalopathy - a buildup of toxins in the brain due to liver dysfunction
Electrolyte Imbalances - abnormal levels of minerals in the blood that affect nerve and muscle function
Systemic Infections - infections that affect the brain or spinal cord, such as toxoplasmosis, FIP, and distemper
Meningitis - sometimes caused by systemic infections like toxoplasmosis, fungal disease, or autoimmune conditions
Diagnostics commonly include bloodwork and imaging such as MRI or CT scan.
Treatment often includes medications, hospitalization, and treating the underlying cause.
Many medical neurology cases improve with proper treatment, especially when caught early. Some conditions may need long-term care, but many pets go on to live happy, comfortable lives.
